Module 3: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future Tenses

In this module, we will dive into verb conjugation in the present, past, and future tenses. Understanding these tenses will help you talk about actions that have already happened, are happening now, or will happen in the future. This module is key for expanding your ability to express yourself in Spanish beyond basic phrases.

Lesson 1: Present Tense (Conjugating Regular Verbs)

Regular -ar Verbs:

Hablar – to speak

  • yo hablo – I speak
  • tú hablas – you speak
  • él/ella/usted habla – he/she/you (formal) speak
  • nosotros/as hablamos – we speak
  • vosotros/as habláis – you all speak (Spain)
  • ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan – they/you all speak

 

Estudiar – to study

  • yo estudio – I study
  • tú estudias – you study
  • él/ella/usted estudia – he/she/you (formal) study
  • nosotros/as estudiamos – we study
  • vosotros/as estudiáis – you all study (Spain)
  • ellos/ellas/ustedes estudian – they/you all study

 

Trabajar – to work

  • yo trabajo – I work
  • tú trabajas – you work
  • él/ella/usted trabaja – he/she/you (formal) work

Note: In conversation, when the subject is implied by the verb conjugation, the pronoun is not necessary. For example, Trabajo means “I work”. The pronoun Yo is not typically used. We would simply say, Trabajo mucho. I work a lot.

Comer – to eat

Regular -ar Verbs in the Preterite and Imperfect

The Preterite and Imperfect Tenses are two ways to express actions that happened in the past. Here are some examples:

Hablar (to speak)

Preterite:

  • yo hablé – I spoke
  • tú hablaste – you spoke (informal)
  • él/ella/usted habló – he/she/you (formal) spoke
  • nosotros/nosotras hablamos – we spoke
  • vosotros/vosotras hablasteis – you all spoke (informal, Spain)

Imperfect:

Lesson 5: Asking Questions and Negative Sentences

Forming Questions:

  • ¿Qué? – What?
  • ¿Quién? – Who?
  • ¿Dónde? – Where?
  • ¿Cuándo? – When?
  • ¿Por qué? – Why?
  • ¿Cómo? – How?

Example:

  • ¿Dónde vives? – Where do you live?
  • ¿Qué hiciste ayer? – What did you do yesterday?

Negative Sentences:

  • No – No
  • No quiero – I don’t want
  • No entiendo – I don’t understand

Example:

  • No hablé – I didn’t speak
  • No voy a comer – I’m not going to eat

Lesson 6: Expressing Preferences and Opinions

Expressing Likes and Dislikes:

  • Me gusta – I like
  • No me gusta – I don’t like
  • Me encanta – I love
  • No me gusta nada – I don’t like it at all

Examples:

  • Me gusta helado – I like ice cream
  • No me gusta personas malas – I don’t like bad people
  • Me encanta la música

Expressing Preferences:

  • Prefiero – I prefer
  • Me gustaría – I would like
  • Me parece bien – It seems good to me

Examples:

  • Prefiero el té – I prefer tea
  • Me gustaría ir al cine – I would like to go to the movies
