The Lake Museum, also known as the Underwater Maya Archaeology Museum, is located in the municipality of Panajachel. During an expedition in 1996 under the waters of the lake, the Guatemalan diver Roberto Samayoa discovered several Mayan artifacts in the submerged city of Samabaj, also known as the Mayan Atlantis of Lake Atitlán. Later, with the support of National Geographic, they documented this submerged city and created the museum to display the Mayan artifacts.
“Great museum if you like to read (I definitely do)! All descriptions are in Español and English. Great museum for adults and teens who are interested in civilization and geological history. Not very large, but a ton of great information about Mayan influence, Spanish influence, Volcanos, and Lake Atitilán.” -Andrew Bellows
